"Sustainable" is one of the most overused words in apparel — and one of the easiest for buyers, retailers and marketplaces to call out. Certifications exist to replace the claim with proof. If you want to build a premium brand story around organic or recycled materials, it pays to know what the main certifications actually cover. Here's the plain-English version for brand owners.
GOTS covers certified organic fibres plus processing, environmental and social requirements. OCS verifies organic content and chain of custody. GRS and RCS verify recycled content and chain of custody, while GRS adds social, environmental and chemical requirements. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests a certified textile article for harmful substances. Why certified fabrics matter for your brand
Three reasons brand owners move to certified materials:
- Premium positioning: certified organic or recycled fabric is a concrete, defensible reason a garment costs more — far stronger than the word "eco" on a hangtag.
- Retail & marketplace access: wholesale buyers, department stores and some online marketplaces increasingly require certification or documentation before they'll stock a "sustainable" line.
- Trust: a third-party standard backs your claim, which protects you against greenwashing accusations as scrutiny tightens.
The certifications, explained
GOTS
Global Organic Textile Standard. Covers organic fibre content plus environmental and social criteria through processing. The benchmark for organic cotton.
OCS
Organic Content Standard. Verifies and tracks the amount of organic material in a product through the supply chain, without GOTS' processing criteria.
GRS
Global Recycled Standard. Verifies recycled content plus environmental, social and chemical criteria — common for recycled polyester and blends.
RCS
Recycled Claim Standard. Confirms and tracks recycled content through the chain, a lighter counterpart to GRS.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Tests the fabric for harmful substances. It's about product safety, not organic or recycled content — the two are often paired.
How they combine
A single fabric can carry several: e.g. GOTS organic cotton that is also OEKO-TEX tested. Match certifications to the story you're telling.
The part most brands get wrong: certified material ≠ certified garment
This is where claims get brands into trouble. A certification like GOTS or GRS attaches to the fabric and the certified mills that made it. To label a finished garment as certified, the certification generally has to be carried through the whole chain with scope and transaction certificates — fibre, fabric, and manufacturing all in scope. So the honest, accurate way to describe most programs is "made with certified [organic/recycled] fabric," not "certified garment," unless full chain-of-custody certification is in place for that order. Getting this wording right is part of not greenwashing.
Lesstell sources eligible certified fabrics from certified suppliers. GOTS, OCS, GRS, RCS and OEKO-TEX are not Lesstell factory certificates. If a buyer requires a certified finished-product claim or certification logo, the applicable certified operators, scope, chain-of-custody records and order documentation must be confirmed before production. How to use certified fabric in your brand story
Be specific and provable. "Made with GOTS-certified organic cotton" or "shell in GRS-certified recycled polyester" is stronger and safer than a vague "eco-friendly." Keep the certificate references and supplier documentation on file, name the exact certification and what it covers, and don't stretch a fabric-level certification into a claim about the whole garment. Specific, documented claims are what premium buyers actually reward. What's the difference between GOTS and OCS?
Both cover organic fibre content, but GOTS also sets environmental and social criteria through processing. OCS verifies and tracks organic content without those processing requirements.
What does GRS certify?
GRS (Global Recycled Standard) verifies recycled content plus environmental, social and chemical criteria. RCS is a lighter standard that confirms and tracks recycled content only.
Is OEKO-TEX the same as organic?
No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests a fabric for harmful substances — it's about safety, not organic or recycled content. A fabric can be OEKO-TEX tested and also GOTS or GRS certified.
Can you certify my finished garment as GOTS?
Not through fabric sourcing alone. Lesstell does not claim GOTS certification for its factory. A GOTS claim on a finished product requires the applicable certified operators and documentation across the relevant supply chain. Send us the retailer’s exact requirement before ordering, and we can check whether the proposed material and supply-chain documents support it.
